Hawthorne East Apartments is part of the Portland Housing Bureau’s 11X13 Housing Preservation Campaign to renovate 11 privately owned affordable apartment buildings in Portland. The seven story reinforced masonry and precast concrete building was constructed in 1982. In 2013, Northwest Housing Alternatives acquired the building and preserved the Section 8 vouchers associated with the units serving seniors and disabled residents. With a focus on accessible and sustainable features, the renovation includes a reoriented main building entry, a new accessible ramp and direct access to Hawthorne Blvd and nearby public transportation. The design team worked skillfully with the renovation challenges presented to maintain livability for the residents while under construction.
