Our House

For 20 years Our House has provided facility-based, 24-hour nursing care to people in the advanced stages of HIV / AIDS. In 2006 the existing 8,000 sf facility in SE Portland was completely rebuilt and expanded to a 14,500 sf 2-story facility where they could better provide skilled Nursing Care, Social Services and Occupational Therapy for its residents. This licensed Residential Care Facility includes 14 single occupancy rooms with private baths and generous communal spaces including the dining room, living room, therapy room, sitting areas and large staffed kitchen. The new facility also expanded the nursing care spaces, conference room and staff offices. Using prominent light wells, natural light washes the internal spaces including the nursing station, corridors and offices. Surrounding the building is an existing tree canopy that was preserved, new landscaping swales as well as the ‘public’ rose garden along the sidewalks. The residents also have access to a private backyard sanctuary for quiet reflection as well as gatherings. Specific elements implemented in this project include a high efficiency central ventilation system, pervious pavers, pervious concrete and landscaped swales to retain and absorb rain water, abundant natural lighting, nontoxic finishes, including adhesives and paints, and covered bike parking for staff and residents.
