Walnut Park
In an effort to preserve affordable housing for longtime senior residents in this predominately African-American neighborhood in NE Portland, REACH Community Development acquired the Walnut Park apartments. They engaged CHA to upgrade this 20-plus-year-old building. The primary focus is the building envelope, including windows, roof, insulation and siding. Other energy-saving upgrades include heating and ventilation, appliances and lighting. The lobby was reconfigured to encourage community activities and facilitate property management. The site was reconfigured so that residents may benefit from well-designed outdoor community spaces and also to incorporate on-site stormwater management and rainwater harvesting.
