master planning
Great communities start with a plan. Masterplanning addresses many of the problems that plague non-planned communities – accessibility to services, availability of transportation options, an overall sense of community can all be achieved when the time is taken to create a masterplan to fulfill a community’s needs.
CHA has been implementing various services we outlined in our1993 masterplan of this 5.54-acre neighborhood to make it more community oriented. To date we have completed the renovation of 178 units of multi-family affordable housing, and built 151 units of new multi-family affordable housing, a new community center/health clinic and child care facility.
CHA, in collaboration with Mahlum Architects, completed a HOPE VI study that resulted in a $35 million grant from US HUD. We conducted over twenty workshops and community meetings with residents, staff and neighbors of the Columbia Villa community. The result is a dramatic masterplan that unifies the community and neighbors in the surrounding Portsmouth neighborhood.
CHA’s masterplan for the redevelopment of Iris Court, 108 units of the most physically distressed public housing in Portland resulted in a 16.9 million award from US HUD. In collaboration with the Housing Authority of Portland, CHA created a redevelopment strategy based on these guiding principles: to provide increased opportunities for successful residency; to promote a sense of “ownership” among residents, management, maintenance and service providers; to promote an increased sense of community and security; and to provide a sound capital investment for HAP and the community.
