Multnomah County Animal Shelter On-Call Projects

CLIENT:

Multnomah County

The Multnomah County Animal Shelter is frequently ranked among the top shelters in the country. Proud of this distinction, MCAS is focused on improving the comfort of animals during their stay at the shelter and providing a positive experience for the people who visit the shelter. Starting in 2005 with the Cattery project, CHA has worked on a series of projects that contribute to meeting that vision. Our work includes:

  • Cattery: The addition of an expanded, dedicated space for cats with visiting/play space for prospective adopting families.

  • Master Plan: Looking to the future, CHA developed plans for what could be a new facility to reflect MCAS’s mission as animal advocates. The plan proposed additional space for planned growth, interpretive / educational displays, improved veterinary spaces, and addressed building sustainability.

  • Kennels: CHA replaced the concrete and chain-link fence kennels with modern, safer accommodations for animals.

  • Entry Wayfinding: CHA reconfigured the approach and building entry to facilitate separate entrances for animal drop-off, adoption, and administrative visits. The new entries reduce congestion and provide clarity and privacy for the public.

  • Egress Signage Program: This project updated the fire/life safety plan and exit plan for the MCAS facility. This included updated egress lighting and added illuminated exit signage along the newly-determined exit routes for the safety of visitors and staff.

  • Electric Annex: The CHA team upgraded electrical service for the MCAS building, correcting safety and Code issues while providing capacity for future upgrades and expansions.

  • Reroof: In need of a roof replacement, the adoption wing received full replacement along with new mechanical units to improve energy efficiency and long-term maintenance.
